Steps to installing a gas water heater

Step 1: Evaluation

The first step to installing a new water heater is evaluating the job. What type of water heater will be used? There are many choices including gas, electric, tankless, and high efficiency. Measurements will need to be taken to make sure that the old one has space to come out and the new one has enough room to fit. Flues and gas lines should be inspected to see what will need to be replaced. Tankless water heaters often use PVC flues which will need to be vented to the outside of the home.

Step 2: Removal

The removal of the old water heater can be a laborious process. Water shutoffs will need to be turned. Because these valves don’t get used very often they are usually hard to turn. In some cases, they are frozen and can’t be turned. In these instances, other methods will have to be used to shut off the water. Old water heaters often have sediment built up in them. This will cause a problem when draining the water. The sediment also makes the water heaters very heavy. Removal should only be attempted with two people and a dolly. Care should be taken to turn off gas lines completely. A water heater installation is more technical than you might think. Our skilled plumbers have methods to deal with each and everyone one of these challenges.

 Step 3: Preparation

Before installing the new water heater it is important to prepare the area and the water heater. Pipes should be cleaned and sanded. New water shut offs may need to be installed. The area should be thoroughly cleaned and dried. At this point, our plumbers will also take an inventory to make sure that all the needed parts and supplies are available. If a tankless water heater is to be installed this is the step in which our plumbers will run the new flue and gas line.

Step 4: Installation

The installation of a water heater should only be done by a skilled plumber. Pex pipe may be used to replace old copper lines. Alternatively, new copper lines which are sweated in with solder might be the way to go. Care should be taken to install everything to code and in conjunction with the installation manual. Gas lines will need to be sized properly and leak checked. Connections should be done with care and checked for leaks. Flues should be replaced and updated when necessary. In many cases, a water regulator, expansion tank, and an earthquake strap will need to be installed. The proper tools are essential to a quality water heater installation.

 Step 5: Final Checks

After installing the water heater a plumber will turn on the water and let the tank fill. Faucets will be opened to remove any air from the water pipes. Connections will be checked for signs of leaks. After the water heater is lit adjustments may be needed to ensure proper combustion. Tankless water heaters will need a lot more set up than a standard gas water heater. The final step is the cleanup. Our plumbers will leave the area cleaner than when they found it!
