About the owner:
Hi my name is Chad Humphrey the owner of Humphrey Plumbing Heating and Air and I would like to share a little about myself and my company. During my career I have met with thousands and thousands of home owners some of whom I still call friends to this day. It is the best part of my job and I look forward to meeting many more.
I am from Utah and I have lived here my entire life. One of the benefits of growing up in Utah is being surrounded by family oriented and business savvy, entrepreneurial personalities. Hard work ethic and the importance of a business reputation was instilled in me at a young age. In High School, I was eager to start my own company, and so I started a landscaping business. Although I found success in the industry, after a few years, I decided that I wanted to expand my skill set and find an industry that I was more passionate about.
I’ve always had an interest in fixing things and building things, so in 2000, when a friend offered me an opportunity to learn more about the HVAC industry, I jumped at the opportunity. I started at the bottom. From tune up technician, to service technician, to installer… There wasn’t an area of the industry I wasn’t interested in mastering. On a quest to expand my knowledge and learn new techniques from masters in the industry, I accepted positions at several heating and air companies in the SLC metro area over the course of the next few years. But I just knew I could do it better! At these other companies, I saw a lot of an unethical practices and didn’t want my name to be associated with a company that didn’t share my values and ethics.
I knew I wanted to have my own heating and air-conditioning company where I could provide quality equipment and a better service to my customers at a fraction of the cost, so in November of 2005, I took the necessary tests to obtain my own contractor’s license, put an ad in the newspaper classifieds, quit my job, and started running my own company out of the back of my truck. Very quickly, I had more business than I could handle. I went to the two best experts in the industry and asked them to work with me. From 2006-2008, we dominated the industry in Bountiful, UT together.
“In 2009, as the national economy spiraled headlong into the economic downturn, Utahns could see the financial tsunami headed toward our state. And sure enough, Utah was not immune from the havoc wreaked by the perfect storm of overspending and over-leveraging by individuals, businesses and government. The dramatic impact of the Great Recession was felt at its worst in homes across the entire state.” Shortly after making the decision to hire industry leaders, the recession hit Utah. I was forced to cut down on expenses, and was concerned that the lack of appropriate advertisement would harm the growth of my company. However, my reputation for providing a superior level of customer service at an honest rate spread quickly, and we were able to get through it, while companies I worked for in the past failed. I felt validated, and proud of the company I had created.
2009 to 2011: During this time, I was introduced to Angie’s list. I loved it because it allowed our customers the opportunity to leave a review of our services online, and spread our hard earned reputation further than ever. Within months of joining, we were recognized for our superior service and have been presented with the “Super Service Award” every year following. We also went through some hard times…. At the time, we were using Trane products exclusively. Trane had been highly recommended by the experts I trained with, so the decision to use their products came without thought. However, Trane’s engineering department began experimenting with new internal products for the AC units, and it was causing major problems with the equipment. When you own a company with your name on everything, reputation is the most important thing, and our customers were trusting our product recommendation. We were getting return calls to many of the newly installed AC’s, and returning free of charge until the units were working to the customers satisfaction, even if that meant taking a monetary loss. Trane’s failed product testing was affecting the growth of the company, so after months of deliberation, trial and error, and thorough research for the best equipment in the industry, we decided to switch to Amana products. We now stand behind our installations without fear, and our warrantees are unmatched in the business.
2012-2014: I was responsible for completing repairs, turn ups, installations, all while still answering the phones. It became quite overwhelming so I decide to make a change. I rented an office building in Bountiful and hired a secretary, a website developing company and doubled our team of technicians and installers. Together, we could really provide the optimum level of satisfaction to our customers from the moment they picked up the phone. My trusted team of employees each have expert skills in their positions, are able to provide outstanding customer service, are like minded in my company vision and are able to help me reach my goals of expanding.
In 2016, finally free to concentrate more on the continued growth of my company, and less on being out in the field, I set a goal to expand my list of services. My website has always been an area of great interest to me, and I found that plumbing was in the same condition as the HVAC companies I used to work for. The need for quality, honest master plumbers is in high demand.
In 2017, we added plumbing to our list of expert services.
Currently, I have 2 teams of installers, 3 expert HVAC technicians, a master plumber, an office manager and secretary. Most of my personal time is dedicated to providing technical support for our technicians, updating the company website to ensure that the content provides information to our customers that’s useful, and focusing on follow up and reviews. Our 24/7 answering service ensures that if you ever have a problem, there will always be someone there to answer the phone and dispatch an expert technician.
